Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI)
Division of Neurosurgery
Fellowship Positions/Visitor Criteria
The BNI offers one-year clinical fellowships to graduates from ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency training programs in:
- Cerebrovascular/Skull Base Surgery under the direction of Dr. Robert F. Spetzler
- Spine Surgery under the direction of Dr. Volker K.H. Sonntag
- Endovascular Neurosurgery under the direction of Dr. Cameron McDougall
In addition to providing the required information as outlined on the application, applicants must also meet the following criteria in order to be considered for these clinical fellowship positions:
- Applicants must be senior level neurosurgery residents in an ACGME-accredited residency program and/or be board eligible.
- Applicants must be eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the State of Arizona. This means that foreign medical school graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and must have at least 36 months of ACGME-accredited post-graduate training in the US. The Arizona State Board of Medical Examiners web site can be accessed at: www.azdocinfo.org for further information.
- Non-US citizens must have permanent resident status or be able to obtain a valid J-1 visa through ECFMG. Clinical Fellows become employees of Barrow Neurosurgical Associates, the neurosurgery group practice at the BNI, and it is their policy not to accept anyone with an H-1 B visa.
In addition to the above clinical fellowships, we also offer:
- Paid one- and two-year Research Fellowships in Neurosurgery – Cerebrovascular and Spine. Please contact Dr. Mark Preul, Director of Neurosurgery Research, at mark.preul@chw.edu for further information. No medical license requirement is necessary since there is no direct patient contact. Non-US citizens may be sponsored through the University of Arizona in Tucson for non-clinical J-1 visas. Research Fellows become employees of the BNI.
- For unpaid research or observer opportunities - please contact Ms. Ravneet Kaur, Neurosurgery Coordinator, at ravneet.kaur@chw.edu for further information. Short-term visitor opportunities allow visitors to observe in the operating room, participate in educational rounds and participate in on-going research projects. Direct patient contact is not possible due to license and malpractice issues. Non-US citizens may be sponsored through the University of Arizona for visas.
