A New York native, Dr. Curtis Dickman came to Barrow Neurological Institute in 1985 as a resident, and has practiced neurosurgery at BNI since 1992 where he has served as Director of Spinal Research and Associate Chief of the Spine Section within the Division of Neurological Surgery.
Dr Dickman subspecializes in spinal surgery. He performs comprehensive spinal surgery and has special interests in the treatment of tumors of the spine and spinal cord, spinal trauma, surgery of the upper cervical spine ,endoscopic spinal surgery, herniated thoracic discs, spinal fixation and fusion, spinal deformity and instability, artificial disc replacement, and hyperhidrosis.
Barrow is one of the few centers in the world doing spinal thoracoscopy, a type of endoscopic surgery within the chest cavity, which is used to treat abnormalities of the thoracic spine. Dr. Dickman has pioneered the use of thoracoscopy for spinal disorders, has performed more than 700 thoracoscopic spine surgeries, and has written the only textbook on the subject.
Dr. Dickman has been a prolific surgeon, researcher, leader and innovator. He founded the biomechanics research lab at Barrow, and has performed extensive clinical and basic science research. He has authored six medical textbooks and over 175 scientific articles. He is on the editorial boards for several major spinal and neurosurgical journals. He has held executive leadership positions in several spine societies and has been the scientific program director for several major spine societies. He has been an honored guest lecturer at medical institutions throughout the world.
In his leisure time, Dr Dickman enjoys his family and being a musician, painter and athlete. He plays guitar and tenor saxophone. His philanthropic classic rock band Crosstown Traffic has helped local charities raise more than $9 million. His other passions, beside his family, are writing and bicycling. He has competed in the Ironman Europe and Ironman Canada triathlons. |
